Real Life Horror

I grabbed this link from Michelle Moran's History Buff blog.
I don't even really know how to comment, except that I'll be following the story to see if the world can bring some sort of pressure about to help this poor girl.

It's a very short story about a 19 year old rape victim who's being ordered to undergo 200 lashes for being in the car with the boys in the first place, and then for taking the story to the media after her first sentence of 90 lashes.

Stuff like this makes me feel angry and helpless. We all know monsters are out there doing horrible things to people, but we don't expect this sort of horror to be handed out at the hand of the government. Ugh.

Yes, it is horrible. I read about it on Friday. Whenever I read these stories, I thank God I was born in the United States and I wonder how much more repression these people will take before they act against their government. And I cannot help but to wonder how our government is responding, if at all.

I applaud this brave young woman for speaking out to the world about this terrible crime against her committed by the rapists and by her government. She knew the risk she was taking in doing so. She must have known the more the world knows about such atrocities the more pressure will be on her society to change. She may not escape further abuse, but maybe her daughter will live in a society more respectful of women as a result.

I do hope that good comes from her speaking out. I really hope she is saved from her sentence, but even better if she brings about change in her government.
